Food: Week 1

This week we are beginning a new theme – food!

Watch this video and answer the questions:

  • What foods does Rick eat?
  • Where does he travel?

Now think about it:

  • What is something good you ate?  Where were you?
  • What is something bad you ate?  Where were you?

We’re taking a break (ooff!) from current events.  This week we’re going to be talking about Thanksgiving.  This video is an extract from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) – it gives a history of the event and shows you (sort of!) what it is like.

Think about something you like to cook or eat for family celebrations for next week.  If you are feeling ambitious you can even bring in the recipe!

Ebola virus and global health: Week 2

This week we’re going to be listening to the first part of an interview with an American journalist, Denise Clay, on the CBC.  Clay’s interview is based on an article that was published in Time magazine in October.  The interview is very long so we’ll only be listening to the beginning (00:00 – 3:47).

As you listen try to answer these questions:

– What is the relationship between HIV and the Ebola virus?

– What are some problems that the Ebola media coverage has caused?

If you find the audio difficult to understand, or you want to go further, check out Clay’s article in Time:
